The Black Gate, in partnership with Galway City Arts Office and Music Generation Galway City, presents Black Gate Beginnings, a series of youth music events and workshops taking place in October 2022, funded by Creative Ireland.
On October 29th Music Generation Galway City will host a workshop and performance by the critically acclaimed duo of Niwel Tsumbu and Eamonn Cagney in the new GCC Music Centre in Galway Community College.
Niwel Tsumbu is a Congolese-born guitarist with a virtuosic style drawing on jazz, classical, rock, folk and rumba. He has earned praise from All About Jazz for his ‘exquisite and almost seamless’ global fusion and has performed with Sinead O’Connor, Buena Vista Social Club, Rhiannon Giddens and Baaba Maal. Tsumbu’s music is anchored in his sophisticated sense of rhythm, his virtuosic guitar playing and his thrilling improvisations.
Éamonn Cagney is Ireland’s foremost hand-drum percussionist. His masterful percussion-playing and original compositions are displayed on his solo albums Convergence and Enchantment, his long standing duo with Congolese guitarist Niwel Tsumbu, and his numerous collaborations, masterclasses and recordings. One of Ireland’s most cherished musicians, Cagney has regularly worked with diverse musicians and organisations, including Liam Ó Maonlaí, Roger Doyle, the Abbey Theatre, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Denise Chaila, Iarla Ó Lionáird, Lisa O’Neill, John Spillane, Martin Tourish (Altan), Julie Feeney, Mel Mercier, Music Generation, Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, Míchéal Ó Súilleabháin and Louis César Ewande.
This workshop will appeal to young people interested in guitar, percussion, songwriting, improvisation and performance.
