Brass Attack Taster Sessions

Shane O’ Malley and Ronan O’ Malley, musicians from Music Generation Galway City, and the Music Development Officer, Karen Dervan, visited St John the Apostle National School, Knocknacarra on Wednesday, February 26th.

We visited the 5th and 6th classes in their classrooms with two brass instruments, a cornet and a tuba (contrasting in size, for sure!), for all the students to try. Everyone had a turn trying to get a note out of the instruments and it was superb fun for all! Ronan and Shane are both members, tutors and organisers with St Patrick’s Brass Band.

Based in their own hall behind the train station, St Patrick’s Brass Band have been in operation since 1896 and have a senior band for adults and a junior band, where students can avail of very inexpensive Saturday morning tuition and play in the band together. Music Generation Galway City are now offering a 10 week programme of brass lessons to the students of the school, which commenced on March 18th. Instruments are provided to students, which is the same deal available with St Patrick’s Brass Band. Opportunities everywhere!
